(Standardize edilerneme, kategorize edilememe) Punk; ilk çıkışı 1975'te belirli bir rock and roll türünü ve kendisi ile iIişkilendirilen gençlik alt kültürünü anlatmak için kullanılmaya başlansa da, 80'ler sonrası ticari rock müziğin türevlerini tanımlamak için kullanılmaya başlanmıştır. Punk 'underround rock', 'new wave', 'new music', 'street rock', 'power pop', 'avant-punk' ve 'hardcore' gibi terimlerle özdeşleşen anlamlarda da kullanılmıştır. Punk rock, kökenleri 1974 ve 1975 yıllarına, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ve Birleşik Krallık'a dayanan ve kendisini Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Damned, ve The Clash gibi gruplarla kanıtlamış düzen karşıtı rock muzik hareketidir. Bireyin kişisel gelişimini yönlendiren, yaşam biçimini şekillendiren toplumsal organizmayı her şeyin suçlusu olarak görür ve saldırmaktan çekinmez. Punk'a göre her şey alt üst olmalıdır; aykırı, ayrıksı giyim tarzı, sanat ve gündelik yaşamda sınırlann belirsizleştirilmesi, bilinçli kışkırtıcılık, kabul görmüş ve tekdüzeleşmiş yaşam biçiminin yeniden düzenlenmesi (ya da düzensizleştirilmesi) punk yaşam biçiminin devrimci taktikleridir. Punk Alt Kültürü:Punk konserleri, punk giyimi ve sanatı gibi yıkıcıdır. Değerlere yönelik birer saldırıdır. Punk'ın kışkırtıcılık politikasının bir parçası olan gruplar konser sırasında, seyircisi ile şiddet, yıkım gösterisi sergilerier. (Sahneye kusmak, tükürmek, havada uçuşan içki şişeleri, sandalyeler , grup dansı) Punk'ın bu sadomazoşist eğilimi aslında, punk'ın diğer tahripkar unsurlan gibi belli bir şeye dikkat çekmek üzere kullanılan bir şok taktiğiydi. Punklar toplumu nasıl gördüklerini anlatmak istiyorlardı: Anarşi istiyorlardı, yeni bir müzik tarzı geliştirmek ve bu müzik tarzının kaosunu paylaşmak, çoğaltmak istiyorlardı. Punk konserleri ekspresyonist performansı ile "şimdi ve burada"dır. (now-and-here) Ekspresyonizmin sembolü haline gelen Çığlık punkta hem şarkılarında hem de grafik tasarımlannda kendini gösteren bir motiftir: yüksek desibel seviyesi,izleyici ile grup arasında fiziksel ve duyusal etki punk konseri "yaşam alanı" içindedir. O an'ın içinde yaşanılanlar zamandan ve mekandan soyutlanmış kaostur. Punk Rock'ın gelişimi Amerika ile İngiltere arasındaki kültürel alışverişle hız kazanmıştı. Velvet Undergound, New York DolI ve Ramones gibi New York'lu gruplar, 1965'te başlayıp 1970'ler boyunca devam eden bir süreçte, bilinçli bir biçimde "sokak kültürünü" işlemiş ve geleceğe karamsar bakan yeni bir tür müzik üretmişlerdir. (Bu gruplar sadece punk rock'ın değil hard'n' heavy, heavy metal ve türevIerinin de doğuşunda da etkili olmuşlardır.)
